BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...
The Wish...
Two years ago I celebrated a milestone and one of my fondest wish was to be gifted a yellow labrador. I started sending out hints to my guests-to-be...but they all ignored me, for the simple reason that these dogs were too expensive for their wallets. The argument was...if I was not willing to part with my hard-earned money to buy one...why should they? But...but...it was my birthday! Anyway, I didn't get it...until...
The Better Late than Never Gift...
Last Sunday, 2 years, 5 months and several days after that all important birthday, my son's friend casually mentioned that he was giving away 2 more puppies of his yellow lab. Now, imagine me looking disinterested but deep inside my heart was pounding with excitement saying to my son...why don't you get one? And his friend said he can give us one if we want it...before my son could say anything, I said with a big grin...we'll pick it up tomorrow. The next day, after my meetings in Bacolod, I went shopping for puppy food, milk and a crate. I then went to pick up my son and his friend to get our new dog...
Be Careful What You wish For...
It's now 2 days since we got our almost 3 month old yellow lab...whose name we debated overnight until we decided on..."Chief" (remembering The Fox and The Hound, though our puppy is neither fox nor hound) and so far...it's been...well...shall we say...noisy and interrupted sleep for everyone in our part of the house. He whines and cries wanting to get out of his crate, pees every 2 hours more or less, runs after our poor old spitz, Boxer, gnaws and licks everything in sight, and is finicky with his food... and today he tried to pee on the rug but was caught in time. What's good though is that he seems to recognize authority :) I guess the fact that the last time we had a big dog (our late dear departed, german shepherd, April of Jentin) was more than 30 years ago and whose training I had no part of, and the last puppy we had is Boxer who came to us 13 years ago already house-trained, makes it a little hard for me since I really have no experience in training a little puppy. But, it's only been 2 days after all, and thank God for the internet where I find numerous tips in dog training.
What Next?
Now, the next step is to get him his shots...parvo, distemper and last but not the least, the all important anti-rabies :) I look forward to finally getting him house-trained and healthy...for everyone's peace of mind :)
Hey, this is one wish that came true....
